ElectroMaaX Cruiser Alternator 12V 160A
ElectroMaaX Cruiser Alternator 12V 160A
SKU:ELCSM-12-160A
Advanced battery systems are going on boats of all sizes. With many smaller horsepower engines you would have to either compromise and get an under powered alternator, or do an engine pulley conversion to serpentine. With the Cruiser line of alternators from ElectroMaax there is now a solution. The Cruiser line is specifically a small case alternator that can output up to 160A continuous with your existing twin V engine pulley. Simply determine the correct foot mount for your engine and replace your old alternator.
Key Features:
- 12V
- 160A max output
- Small frame size fits virtually any inboard or I/O engine
- Works with twin V 1/2in belts or serpentine
- High output at lower RPMs
- Internal rectifier
- Contains internal regulator for simple lead acid installations
- Can be paired with external regulator for custom control
- aircraft grade 6061 aluminum
- Ideal for lithium ion batteries and large battery banks
- Great option for secondary alternator position
- Available in common mounting sizes for a majority of engines
For advanced battery systems external regulator is recommended: Shop regulator
The problem with most alternators is they were designed for lead acid battery charging in the automotive industry. Lead acid commonly only accepts 25% of the amp-hour rating, so the alternators that charge them were not designed to output 100% continuously. With the introduction of lithium technology now batteries can accept nearly 100% of their amp-hour rating. Traditional alternators simply can't handle that and will either burn out or temperature compensate their output down to mundane levels.
Previously, to achieve higher amperages many boaters were turning to larger alternators that require serpentine belts to achieve the current ratings. The Cruiser line of alternators solves both problems. The Cruiser is a small case alternator that fits almost any size engine and works off existing twin V belts and engine pulleys, all the while achieving up to 160A continuous at low engine RPM.
The alternator was designed from the ground up specifically for the how marine engines are used. With specialized windings the Cruiser can output higher amperages at lower RPMs without the need for large pulley ratios. This allows boaters to us the Cruiser as a generator supplement or replacement.
The alternator housing is made out of aluminum. Aluminum provides maximum heat dissipation while remaining light weight. This allows the alternator to provide continuous high output without temperature compensation and work with twin V belts.
Contains internal regulator for simple lead acid battery installations. Allowing the alternator to be plug and play with Yanmar engines. Can also be wired with external regulators for larger battery banks desiring custom or specialized charging.

There are 4 common mounting styles in the marine industry.
3.15in Dual Foot (Saddle mount)
This is a standard for Yanmar engines and is also common on Mercruiser, Lehman, Perkins, and Hitachi. The 3.15in is measured between the two mounting feet.
4in Dual Foot (J-180)
This mount is common on larger engines when you are replacing a large frame alternator. The 4in mount is standard for newer Volvo Penta engines built post 2005. Also found on higher horsepower engines from manufacturers like Cummins, Caterpillar, John Deere, Detroit Diesel, and MTU.
The 4in is measured between the two mounting feet.
1in Single Foot*
This mount is primarily found on smaller horsepower engines by Caterpillar, Atomic, Ford, and Crusader.
The 1in is the thickness of the mounting foot that bolts into the engine (opposite the tensioning arm).
2in Single Foot*
This mount was standard on Volvo Penta engines built prior to 2005. It is also common on mid-horsepower older engines from Cummins, Mercruiser, Perkins, Westerbeke, and GM.
The 2in is the thickness of the mounting foot that bolts into the engine (opposite the tensioning arm).
*We offer the 1in and 2in foot as a single item. It comes with a frame designed for a 1in foot and includes an optional 1in spacer. If mounting in a 1in foot application remove the spacer, if mounting in a 2in foot application leave the spacer in.
You can verify what alternator type you have by measuring the mounting foot (or dual foot spacing) that is not attached to the tensioning arm. Feel free to email us those pictures with your engine information and we will help verify.
Pelagic Power Tip
Pelagic Power Tip
There are 3 critical pieces in the alternator system.
1 - Alternator: Driven by engine belts, magnets spin on a rotor around coil windings to produce raw AC electricity.
2- Rectifier: Takes the raw AC electricity that is coming in pulses from the alternator, and smooths out the power to clean DC power.
3 - Regulator: Controls the DC power from the rectifier to proper voltages and amperages to safely charge your batteries, regardless of the RPM.
Due to our focus on advanced battery systems we usually recommend pairing all high output alternators with an external regulator. This allows customized charging to fit your specific system.
The Cruiser line of alternators comes with a simple internal regulator. We only recommend using the internal regulator for charging small starting lead acid batteries. For larger house banks or lithium charging we recommend using an external regulator.
Make sure to purchase a regulator based on your system voltage and the field polarity of your alternator. P-type is the most common alternator in North America while N-type is common in Europe. We only stock P-type alternators in the Cruiser line but can special order N-type if desired. Give us a call with any questions.
