187 series circuit breakers are the bigger brother to the 285 series. Their claim to fame is 5000A interrupt capacity at 14V. They also have larger 5/16in studs mounted at the bottom, which allows for simpler wiring. These features show the 187 was designed specifically for larger battery bank applications in marine and mobile. Like 285 breakers, the 187 is also a thermal style breaker. They are produced with a specified bi-metal. When current travels through this metal it heats up, the metal thickness determines the amperage rating. When the metal hits a certain temperature it warps and trips the lever in the circuit breaker. Since these circuit breakers are thermal it doesn't matter which direction the current flows, the bi-metal will heat up either way. So even though there is a "Line" and "Load" label on the plastic you can install your wires either way.
